Aparna Yadav asks SP to introspect on its poll loss

first_imgLucknow: Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav is in political hibernation after the announcement of Lok Sabha results. His father Mulayam Singh Yadav has not spoken on the party’s debacle or the end of its alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and other party leaders are also tight-lipped on these issues. But Aparna Yadav, the younger daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav, has said that “Mayawati did not acknowledge the respect that we gave her.” Also Read – Modi formed OBC commission which earlier govts didn’t do: Shah Talking to a TV channel, she said: “Mayawati could not digest the respect that the Samajwadi Party gave her. According to the Vedas, it is said that those who cannot digest respect are the ones who cannot digest disrespect either.” Aparna further said that the decision to enter into an alliance with the BSP was taken by Akhilesh Yadav on his own. “Akhilesh Yadav can tell if he consulted anyone before formalising the alliance. I would not like to comment on whether Netaji (Mulayam) was happy with this decision or not,” she said. Aparna said that all Samajwadis would have to come together and introspect on the reasons behind the party’s performance in Lok Sabha elections. “The BJP has whipped up a huge wave in its favour and it should ring an alarm bell for the Samajwadi Party,” she said.last_img read more

1 arrested after brawl aboard Southwest jet during deplaning

1 arrested after brawl aboard Southwest jet during deplaning BURBANK, Calif. – One person was arrested after a brawl erupted aboard a Southwest Airlines jet deplaning in Burbank after arriving from Dallas.A statement Tuesday from the Dallas-based air carrier said the incident happened Sunday aboard Flight 2530 during deplaning at Burbank Bob Hope Airport in the San Fernando Valley suburb of Los Angeles. The fight involved three passengers aboard the Boeing 737. Southwest spokeswoman Alyssa Eliasen says police were summoned and one passenger was arrested, while another incurred minor injuries that didn’t prevent further travel. There was no word on what prompted the quarrel. The Southwest statement says flight crews are trained to de-escalate conflict. The brawl is the latest in a series of disturbances involving U.S. airliners. Problems began last month with cellphone video capturing a passenger being dragged off a United Airlines flight. Other horror stories from customers surfaced later involving flights on Delta and American airlines. Then late Monday, irate passengers swarmed ticket counters at the Fort Lauderdale airport after Spirit Airlines cancelled nine flights, blaming the decision on pilots’ failure to show up. Some travellers started a near-riot at the Fort Lauderdale terminal as hundreds of travellers were left stranded.Deputies arrested three people from New York in the Fort Lauderdale airport, charging them with inciting a riot, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and trespassing. by The Associated Press Posted May 9, 2017 7:10 pm MDT Last Updated May 9, 2017 at 8:00 pm MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email read more

Knicks JR Smith Wins Sixth Man of the Year

J.R. Smith arrived in New York before this season believing he would be a starter. When he was relegated to coming off the bench, he was not happy. But Smith showed something he had not in his career: maturity. That personal growth allowed him to accept the role and then flourish in it, culminating with Monday’s announcement that he earned the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award.Smith received 484 points, including 72 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 writers and broadcasters. The Clippers’ Jamal Crawford finished second with 352 points, getting 31 first-place votes.“I just wanted to show everybody that I could be a team guy and it’s all about the team,” Smith said at a news conference attended by his family, teammates and coaches.Smith averaged 18.1 points in 80 games, all off the bench. He had 29 games in which he scored 20 points as a reserve, tying Crawford for the NBA lead.“Couldn’t have happened to a better guy,” said coach Mike Woodson. “I’m so proud of him, in terms of buying in to what we wanted him to do earlier in the season. And it started this summer. I wasn’t going to start him, coming into this year, and I knew that. And he bought in. He didn’t like it, but he bought in. And it couldn’t have happened to a better person, because he put in the time and he worked his butt off to get to this point, and he got rewarded for it. I’m happy for him.”Smith helped the Knicks win the Atlantic Division title for the first time since 1994. New York is the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and leads the Boston Celtics  1-0 in their first-round playoff series.Smith is the third player in Knicks history to win the NBA’s Sixth Man Award, joining John Starks  (1996-97) and Anthony Mason (1994-95).Despite not making a start, Smith was one of the Knicks’ most important players. He played more than 40 minutes seven times and was often their only scoring threat behind Carmelo Anthony.Anthony, who teamed with Smith for 4½ seasons in Denver, noted that Smith had a more mature approach to the game this year.“I think there comes a point in time in your life where you’re almost forced to grow up, you’re almost forced to mature. You gotta be willing to want to do those things. I think right now, this season, J.R. has done that,” Anthony said. “I think J.R. was forced to grow up, he was forced to be mature and he was willing to take on that challenge, too.” read more

Urban Meyer hires former Gator Mickey Marotti to run OSUs strength and

New Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer has added Mickey Marotti to his staff as assistant athletic director for football sports performance. Marotti’s responsibilities will primarily include running the football program’s strength and conditioning program. “I believe the strength staffs that Mickey has led have been the best staffs in college football,” Meyer said. “He is the best there is at developing physically and mentally tough football players.” Marotti will leave the University of Florida where he’s been employed since 2005 and most recently served as the Gators’ director of sports performance. Meyer and Marotti first met when the two were graduate assistants at OSU in 1987. They also worked together at the University of Cincinnati and Notre Dame where Marotti led the schools’ strength and conditioning programs. When Meyer became Florida’s head coach in 2005, Marotti was one of his first hires. During his seven years at Florida, he helped mold 22 All-Americans and eight first-round NFL draft choices. Marotti is one of 100 strength trainers that have a master of strength and conditioning, which is considered the highest honor in the profession. Known for innovative training techniques, Marotti has had players carry rocks, flip heavy tires, and start workouts at midnight. Meyer said he trusts Marotti and his methods. “There are times in the year when the strength staff has more contact with the team than the coaching staff,” Meyer said, “and I have complete trust in Mickey Marotti’s abilities to prepare our student-athletes to be the strongest, fastest and mentally toughest football players they can be.” Marotti will step into his new role on Jan. 2 after OSU returns from their Gator Bowl matchup against Florida. Jerry Emig, associate director for athletic communications, said the details of Marotti’s contract, including his salary, are not yet available. Eric Lichter, director of football performance at OSU, and Troy Sutton, OSU’s coordinator of strength and conditioning, previously worked to design OSU’s football strength and conditioning program. Lichter made $151,860 during 2010 and Sutton made $72,804, according to The Collegiate Times. A June 2010 report from the Orlando Sentinel reported Marotti’s annual salary was $240,000. read more

5inch Lenovo LePad on sale in China at low low price of

first_imgWhile I wasn’t sure whether to consider the recently-leaked 5-inch Lenovo 2005S a phone or tablet, the company itself has now straightened things out. The 2005S is officially a LePad tablet, and it’s one sale now in China for just $415.That’s a converted price, but when you compare the 2,699 Yuan 2005S price to the contract-free price of the iPhone 4 when it launched in China (4,999 Yuan), it’s pretty clear that Lenovo has aggressively priced the diminutive tablet. It’s an ever bigger steal compared to the same-sized Samsung Galaxy Note, which is available from Amazon UK for about £590 (roughly $920).What would you be getting if you shelled out those 400-plus Benjamins? A dual-core Qualcomm MSM8260 processor clocked at 1.2GHz, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, 1.3MP rear and 5MP front-facing cameras, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth support, a 5 inch LTPS capacitive touchscreen, and CDMA/HSPA+ connectivity. Even with that huge assortment (or tiny, depending on what kind of gadget you’re classifying the 2005S as), it still weighs in at just 198 grams.Despite the fact that Lenovo is calling this a LePad, it’s shipping with Android 2.3 — not the tablet-friendly Honeycomb or freshly-pressed Ice Cream Sandwich. It’s probably safe to assume that an ICS update will be on the way soon, but there’s no official word yet. There’s also no word on when or if the 2005S will be available outside Lenovo’s stomping grounds, but if you’re looking for a sweet deal on a device that blurs the phone-tablet line, now might be a good time to cross your fingers.Gizchina via TechCrunchlast_img read more

Greed has already damaged the Premier League the Champions League will be

first_img May 10th 2019, 4:25 PM Tweet thisShare on FacebookEmail this article Short URL https://the42.ie/4628580 Greed has already damaged the Premier League – the Champions League will be next On the week English sides conquered the continent, Europe wants to change to emulate them. By Gavin Cooney TO BORROW A phrase used by the writer Declan Lynch – anything any good is always under threat. So naturally, it is now high time to start fretting about the future of the Champions League.  The scenes at full-time as Liverpool knocked out Barcelona. Barca and other European clubs are now fighting back. Source: Martin RickettThe continent barely had time to mourn Ajax’s mad, beautiful failure when an image of their bodies strewn across the turf was used by the New York Times to accentuate a much more serious defeat coming down the tracks. The photo appeared above a report of plans for a new Champions League format from 2024, which resets the likelihood of another club doing an Ajax from ‘highly unlikely’ to ‘almost unfeasible’. It’s planned the competition’s group stage will consist of four groups of eight, with the top four in each group qualifying for the knockout stages. The champions of lower-ranked European leagues like Portugal and Holland would be dumped into a second-tier competition, and while there would be promotion/relegation between the competitions, there are just four spots reserved for new entrants. It is led, the New York Times says, by  “the biggest clubs, notably those from Spain and Italy.”Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu made reference to the plans in an interview with the Guardian ahead of the Liverpool game, saying that “we’re going to change it for the better”, adding that “Fans ask us for more European games” and that it wouldn’t close off the possibility of another Ajax tale, saying “no one’s talking about a closed league or a Super League. It will be an evolution, and attractive. It won’t be a revolution.”Under these proposals, Ajax wouldn’t have even qualified for the competition. One of the men driving this “evolution” is Andrea Agnelli, Juventus chairman and President of the European Clubs Association. The Telegraph report he believes that “more European football is good for the game (for fans, for society, for cultural, for sporting and financial development).”It’s not. It’s good for the biggest clubs, who not only want to play more games for more money, but want the guarantee that they’ll get to play them again the following year regardless of how badly they get beaten.  Andrea Agnelli. Source: SIPA USA/PA ImagesThat these proposals emerged the week the Premier League laid claim to the finalists in both major European finals is entirely fitting.Theresa May was widely derided for appropriating Liverpool’s success for her own feeble and never-ending eejitry on Wednesday morning, saying she might be inspired by Klopp and co. in making a comeback in her talks with the EU.Much of the derision was, as ever, earned. That the Tories might be inspired by a German, Remainer coach and goalscorers from Holland and Belgium heroically staying in Europe is an even more useless motivation than whatever the Dunkirk Spirit is.  But, on a deeper level, the Premier League’s success this week does faithfully answer the Brexiteer fantasy to lead Europe, rather than leave it. It is difficult to conceive of these massive changes to the Champions League being so aggressively pushed were it not for the awesome finances of the Premier League, whose second-most recent TV deal – worth more than £5 billion – immediately made all of its clubs among the 40 richest on the planet. That Everton are currently rated as wealthier than AC Milan makes these moves to reform the Champions League inevitable, as the Premier League has shown Europe’s elite a market which they can’t ignore – not just on grounds of economics but also self-esteem.  Everton: richer than AC Milan. Source: EMPICS SportThere is a compelling case that all of this money has greatly damaged the Premier League, however. With mere survival in the league so lucrative, most clubs are content to do just that, and nowhere is this more pronounced than in games between the Top Six and the Bottom 14.To illustrate just how quickly the norm has changed: Leicester City were feted for having a bit of a go at Manchester City on Monday night; a freewheeling, devil-may-care approach that yielded…[checks notes]… one genuine scoring chance. They at least did more than just pack their penalty area, a tactic general across the league that’s making swathes of clubs look like Michael Caine in Jaws 4: debasing themselves for the sake of the cheque at the end of it all. Most of the product isn’t worth paying for anymore, and this is only going to get worse. The relative equity of how TV money in the Premier League was fundamentally altered last season, when the League’s Top Six successfully argued for a greater share of overseas TV revenue. From next season, any increase in the international rights will be shared according to league position: the agreement means that the highest-placed team will make 1.8 times what the bottom-placed team will make. This could amount to a monstrous amount of money, given the precedent set in the US by NBC who, having paid $250 million for a three-year deal from 2012, committed a billion dollars to a six-year deal up to 2022.As all of this is happening, vast tracts of English football is on its knees: Bury, Bolton, Macclesfield, Morecambe, Reading, Oxford United, Oldham, and Gateshead have all failed to pay their players on time this season alone. Bolton fans protest against chairman and majority stakeholder Ken Anderson. Source: Martin RickettThe English league is what the elite European clubs want: more money and more stability in making it, to be as inoculated as best they can from what Uefa president Aleksander Ceferin today called the “glorious unpredictability” of this week’s amazing semi-final ties. Might some of these problems with the English league be replicated in the new European format? If sides can secure their status in the competition by virtue of their performances in it, it may breed a similar cautious, negative style that is alien to the commitments to attacking making the competition so breathtaking now. But of greater concern: locking out the many – in favour of the few – would be disastrous for many clubs and domestic leagues. The Premier League has done more than conquer Europe this season, it has led a profound philosophical shift in the game’s worth.Danny Blanchflower’s assertion that “the game is about glory” isn’t shared in these latest plans for the Champions League; the elite clubs see it as about something entirely different. For them it is about money, which – to quote a great man – doesn’t just talk but swears. Television presenters may find themselves trying to excuse more than just Jurgen Klopp’s profanity in years to come.  Premier League fixtures  Share14 Tweet Email3 52 Comments 43,196 Views Friday 10 May 2019, 8:01 PMlast_img read more
