NEW DELHI — India’s central bank has lowered its key interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 6% to strengthen domestic growth ahead of a national election next week. The interest rate is what the federal bank charges on lending to commercial banks. Lower interest rates help borrowers. The rate cut comes amid a deterioration in the outlook for regional and global growth. In a bimonthly review of the economy released on Thursday, the Reserve Bank of India cut the retail inflation forecast to 2.9-3% for the first half of this fiscal year. It cited lower food and fuel prices and expectations for a normal rainy season. In its February policy statement, the RBI had projected retail inflation at between 3.2-3.4%.India’s financial year runs from April-March.The Associated Press
Staff from several UN agencies, the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping force (UNAMID) and the Danish Refugee Council are on a week-long mission to West Jebel Marra to distribute aid, according to a press release issued by the mission.Aid workers aim to deliver more than 360 kilograms of food and medical supplies, up to 2.5 tons of plastic sheets or tarpaulins and 50 high-capacity rolling water containers, as well as blankets, soaps, kitchen sets and other non-food items. They will also assess the latest humanitarian conditions on the ground during the mission, which began on Sunday.Oriano Micaletti, the head of UNAMID’s humanitarian protection strategy coordination division, said this week’s mission is part of broader efforts by the mission to support aid agencies as they deliver assistance to remote areas that had previously been cut off for months or years because of conflict or insecurity.Large areas of the remote Jebel Marra have been cut off because of continued fighting between Government forces, allied militiamen and rebels based in the area. Conflict has raged in Darfur since 2003, and as many as 300,000 people are estimated to have been killed and 2.7 million others displaced. The mission – which includes representatives of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the UN World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) – is slated to cover a series of towns and villages, including Nertiti, Kutrum, Kiwilla, Thur, Golo and Killin. It follows Operation Spring Basket, a joint UNAMID-OCHA initiative earlier this year aimed at establishing permanent and safe humanitarian access to remote areas. 9 August 2011United Nations humanitarian workers in Sudan’s troubled Darfur region are delivering food, medical supplies and other relief items to people living in the west of the mountainous Jebel Marra, an area that has been largely cut off from outside assistance by the ongoing conflict.

Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake sacks Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton for a game-winning safety in overtime at Sun Life Stadium Oct. 31. The Dolphins won, 22-20. Credit: Courtesy of MCTAfter four straight wins the Cincinnati Bengals (6-3) fell to the Miami Dolphins (4-4) in overtime, 22-20, which also ended Miami’s four-game losing streak.Quarterback Andy Dalton was hot coming into the game, having thrown 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions in his previous three games. But against Miami, he turned the ball over four times, throwing three interceptions and losing a fumble. The Dolphins raced to an early 17-3 lead behind a strong ground game, gaining 142 rushing yards in the first half. To make matters worse, in the second quarter, Pro Bowl defensive tackle Geno Atkins went down with an injury to his right ACL. This came less than two weeks after Cincinnati lost its top cornerback, Leon Hall, to an Achilles tear.Cincinnati rookie running back Giovani Bernard (nine carries, 79 yards) stepped up and scored twice for the Bengals on the ground. The second one was an electrifying 35-yard run early in the fourth quarter in which he was nearly tackled for a significant loss before shedding tacklers, turning outside to the left and then finally cutting back to the right to tie the game. But soon after, Bernard would also leave the game with a rib injury.Cincinnati and Miami exchanged field goals in the last two minutes, sending the game to overtime. After the Dolphins failed to score, the Bengals moved the ball to Miami’s 39-yard line. But instead of attempting a 56-yard field goal, Cincinnati opted to punt.It was a questionable move as kicker Mike Nugent had already nailed a 54-yard field goal with 1:24 left in the fourth quarter. Also, two games earlier, he hit a game winning 54-yard against the Detroit Lions as time expired. After the Dolphins failed to score again, the Bengals received the ball again at their own eight-yard line. On third and 10, Dalton went back to pass but was quickly sacked for the fifth time in the game, this one in the end zone to end the game on a safety. Wake (three sacks) shot up the middle almost untouched for the game winner. With Dalton and the offense once again struggling and the defense limping, Cincinnati can only hope young players like Bernard step up to change the dynamic of the team.
The Hunter Mining Show, a new trade exhibition developed by and for the Hunter Region mining industry, will have its launch event in Singleton – the heart of the NSW coal industry – in March next year. To be held from March 12-14, 2015, the Hunter Mining Show 2015 is a community-focussed mining trade show, running in conjunction with the inaugural Hunter Coal Festival.Peter Eason, Chairman of the Hunter Coal Festival, said the exhibition would be a unique opportunity for equipment suppliers, service providers and miners to meet, network and do business as part of the region’s mining community.“Owned by the Singleton Business Chamber, the Hunter Mining Show will work with the region’s major mining companies, leading equipment suppliers, local businesses and the NSW Minerals Council,” said Mr Eason.“We have developed the Hunter Mining Show to be the trade show component of the inaugural Hunter Valley Coal Festival, which itself will be a celebration of mining’s contribution to the Hunter community during March 2015.“The show will also be a showcase for the mining industry to present its products, achievements and innovations to the broader community, helping all sectors achieve a better understanding of what the industry has to offer,” he said.“And at a time when the Hunter mining sector is doing it really tough – this event will help remind the industry and the wider community that despite everything, the mining industry is still responsible for a huge amount of business in the region.“It will be an ideal opportunity for those businesses and suppliers who are a key part of this industry to showcase their support for Hunter mining,” he said.Eason said the Hunter Mining Show would be very different to a “traditional” mining trade exhibition“The major point of difference for this event is it has been designed for and by the Hunter business community and mining industry – with the aim of meeting the diverse needs of all sections of the mining industry, from senior management to those at the coalface.”For example, the first two days of the show has been designated “trade only”, offering a local venue for suppliers to exhibit their latest offerings and engage with key representatives from the NSW mining industry.“Day 3 of the show will be open to the wider community as well, providing an opportunity for anyone with an interest in mining and what it has to offer – families, kids, partners, friends, students and the like – to come along and see the latest technology and innovations,” he said.“The Hunter Mining Show’s ‘Community Day’ has been designed to really bring the regional community together with the mining industry, including a parade through the streets of Singleton.“The parade will feature equipment on display at the show, along with historical mining equipment, as well as community floats – in a real celebration of the success and prosperity that coal mining has brought to the region.”Eason said that because the Hunter Mining Show had been developed with and was owned by the local business community, show pricing and packages had been structured to meet the needs of local suppliers – with profits flowing back to the local community.“We have engaged professional show organisers and promoters – with wide experience with mining exhibitions around Australia – to carry out sales and management for the Hunter Mining Show,” said Eason.“The Hunter Mining Show will be widely promoted through local and regional Hunter Valley mainstream and industry media, as well as through key national and international mining publications.“In addition, as a locally owned show, servicing the Hunter region, much of the marketing and promotion for the show will be through the industry and the community, leveraging personal contacts and word of mouth,” he said.Photo courtesy of Rio Tinto Coal Australia
Updated, 21:02A WORKER on the telephone helpline for the Local Property Tax has been suspended, amid allegations that they inappropriately asked callers for their credit card details and then used them to attempt inappropriate transactions. The worker is suspected of having asked callers for their credit card details, even though it was unnecessary for callers to give them.Abtran, a Cork-based company which operates the helpline on behalf of the Revenue Commissioners, said the procedure had emerged on Thursday evening. When managers listened back to recordings of the calls taken by that operator, it emerged that 11 callers’ card details had been solicited unnecessarily.Abtran said it understood that the worker involved had attempted “to effect transactions”, but had failed to do so.It added that both matters were now the subject of investigation, and that the Gardaí had met and interviewed the worker in question on Friday morning. The worker was suspended immediately. The company added that the incident did not involve access to electronic payment systems, which had remained secure, and that the worker had instead used a pen and paper to transcribe the details offered by the callers.“Over the weekend advanced call recording and reporting systems have been used to immediately identify the customers affected and the Gardaí have contacted the credit card companies of these customers,” it said.“The company has identified that this is an isolated matter relating to a single individual only,” it added, saying it did not have access to any Revenue systems, and that its telephone line for operating credit card payments of the tax was in a “secure, ring-fenced environment”.Revenue offers five-point checklist for worried customersIn a separate statement, the Revenue Commissioners said it was “extremely concerned” to learn of the issue, but said it was satisfied that no cardholder had suffered any loss.“Because all calls to the LPT Helpline are recorded, sophisticated call management and recording systems have been interrogated to seek to identify any other similar risks,” it said.“Abtran has assured Revenue in that regard and the Commissioners are satisfied that the company is treating this matter with the utmost seriousness.”Revenue offered a five-point check-list for customers who paid their tax over the helpline, to ensure that their transaction was correctly handled:Did they select the “on-line payment” option from the menu or, if not, were they transferred from a first agent to a second agent before giving payment details? Were they asked for their personal and property details? Were they asked for their payment details? Were they asked to confirm and declare that all their details were correct?Did they, within 2 weeks of filing, receive acknowledgement of their payment from Revenue? It said customers who could answer ‘Yes’ to all five questions had no need for concern.Any customer with concerns about their payment can contact a dedicated Revenue number, 1890 22 63 36, from 9am tomorrow. This is a separate helpline and is not the one operated by Abtran.A Garda spokesman stressed that no arrests had been made. The Data Protection Commissioner has been informed.
While there’s plenty we now know about the ultra-secret Microsoft Surface tablets, there’s still some key information that hasn’t been revealed yet. We don’t know how many cores the ARM and Intel processors will feature or how fast they are. We don’t know exactly when they’ll be arriving on store shelves. And we don’t know how much they’re going to cost. Not specifically, anyway. Microsoft did say that the Surface tablets will be priced to be comparable to other ARM tablets and Ultrabooks. DigiTimes’ sources in the manufacturing chain, however, have told them that the Tegra 3 model with Windows RT will retail for more than $599. That wouldn’t quite count as “comparable.”The 32GB Asus Transformer TF300 sells for about $399, as does the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. While the 32GB Wi-Fi only iPad sells for $599, it’s packing a much more costly Retina display and not a fairly standard 1366 x 768 unit. While a keyboard and Office RT are nice additions, they may not be enough to get consumers to drop big-time cash on a third screen at a premium price. If Microsoft is serious about competing — and they are — then they’ll stay below $600.The Windows Surface Pro will come in around $799. That seems reasonable enough for an Intel-powered tablet PC right now, and it’s in line with 2nd-generation Ultrabook prices. But considering that Ultrabook prices are sliding and Microsoft is a late arrival to the tablet battle, that price might be a little on the high side as well. These are only guesses, and Microsoft managed to keep the Surface tablet project a complete secret for more than three years. While Windows 8 leaked into the wild from its very early stages, we heard nothing about Surface until the week leading up to the reveal. It’s clear that they want to compete, and based on their most successful hardware venture so far — the Xbox — they may be willing to be aggressive on price in order to attract shoppers’ attentions come launch day.More at DigiTimes

ORGANISERS OF A music festival in The Bahamas that was billed as a luxury getaway but collapsed in chaos have been hit with a $100 million lawsuit alleging fraud. The Fyre Festival was aborted on Friday after hundreds of partygoers arrived only to find relief-camp style tents and rudimentary sandwiches rather than the promised lavish experience.Tickets for the festival cost up to $12,000 with some VIP packages rising to $250,000.“The festival’s lack of adequate food, water, shelter and medical care created a dangerous and panicked situation among attendees… that was closer to The Hunger Games or Lord of the Flies than Coachella,” reads the lawsuit filed on behalf of Daniel Jung in Los Angeles. The festival, led by New York rapper Ja Rule and tech entrepreneur Billy McFarland, was billed as “the cultural experience of the decade.”Organisers apologised over the weekend, announcing that all festival-goers would be refunded. But Jung’s attorney, Ben Meiselas of celebrity law firm Geragos and Geragos, said on Twitter a simple refund was “not enough,” posting the opening pages of the class-action suit filed in US District Court in California.Guests promised a “posh, island-based music festival featuring first class culinary experiences” were instead lured into “what various media outlets have since labeled ‘a complete disaster,’ ‘mass chaos’ and ‘a post-apocalyptic nightmare,’” according to the filing. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagram The federal government has introduced a new visa scheme targeted for the parents of migrants, who will be allowed to stay in Australia for up to 10 years. The ‘Temporary Sponsored Parent Visa’ was one of the 2016 election promises made by Malcolm Turnbull and it was included in the 2017-2018 budget; its implementation is dependent on when the amendment to the Act is passed by Parliament.Under the new scheme, migrants to Australia will be able to sponsor their parents coming to the country for up to a decade. Applicants could seek a a three-year visa for $5,000 or a five-year visa for $10,000, with the opportunity of a single renewal for another five years at the same price. The new scheme could benefit up to 15,000 migrant families – mostly those seeking to have their parents spend extended periods of time with them in Australia.Although new visa holders will not be allowed permanent residence status in Australia, nor the right to work, the government hopes they will take on family roles which would see reduced pressure on childcare facilities.”Grandparents will be available and able to, under this visa, care for their grandchildren while the parents work,” Assistant Immigration Minister Alex Hawke told SBS News.More importantly, these visa holders will be required to hold insurance from an Australian provider to cover health costs for the duration of their stay in Australia, and they will also be required to pay for any public health debt they incur, with their sponsor being legally liable for any outstanding debts. This significantly raises the cost for Australians of migrant background who wish to bring their parents to the country, with many community stakeholders foreseeing a rise in private health insurance premiums. Though it is common for temporary visas to require private health insurance, it is the first time the government requires migrants to be liable for public health cover, without a safety net for emergencies and unforeseen health crises. The move to limit the healthcare access of elderly migrants comes following a Productivity Commission report last year that found the average lifetime cost of a single parent visa holder is between $335,000 and $410,000. The government aims to limit increasing healthcare costs this way and it relies on visa fees for funding the Budget. If approved by Parliament, the new scheme will start rolling out in November; should the 15,000 quota be filled in the first year, the Treasury could bank $150 million in fees alone.

Game of Thrones Disney Star Wars Netflix Share your voice 77 Photos TV and Movies Best Netflix series: There’s no shortage of original Netflix series to binge.Culture: Your hub for everything from film and television to music, comics, toys and sports. Netflix tricked me on Thursday. The streaming service dropped a new video with the familiar, haunting-looking Stranger Things logo on it, and for a minute I thought: Is it? Could it be? A season 3 trailer?I pushed play and seconds later I felt like Netflix tossed me into the Upside Down. That was no trailer, but instead a two-minute video showing the kid actors from Netflix’s hit wrapping presents. Ho-ho-horribly not funny, Netflix. The Avengers: Endgame trailer is finally here, after impatient fans tweeted about it pretty much every day since Avengers: Infinity War came out in April. But isn’t it time for a Stranger Things trailer? And Star Wars: Episode 9? Maybe Game of Thrones? Here’s a look at the three trailers that have moved to the top of fans’ want lists now that Endgame ended that waiting game.Star Wars: Episode 9Movie release date: December 2019 in theatersWhat we want to know: The title (personally still rooting for this), how Princess Leia’s story will be handled since the death of beloved Carrie Fisher, what role Luke (Mark Hamill) will play after the events of The Last Jedi, are Rey’s parents really “filthy junk traders”… heck, we’re waiting for pretty much everything. How to get caught up: You can watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Netflix streaming if you’re a member, and you can rent or buy Star Wars: The Force Awakens on various online services, from Amazon Prime Video to iTunes. If you’re old-school, you can buy them on DVD or Blu-ray.The fates of Leia (Carrie Fisher) and her brother, Luke, are both up in the air in Episode IX. Lucasfilm No one’s eager to see new footage from a Star Wars movie, right? Naw, can’t imagine anyone caring about that. PSYCHE. Even Mark Hamill snarked on fans’ desire for Episode IX footage by promising an “exclusive Star Wars trailer photo” and then punking them. When? So when will the first Star Wars: Episode IX trailer make the Kessel Run into our browsers? The Last Jedi came out in December 2017, just like Episode IX is scheduled to come out in December 2019. The first Jedi trailer came out in April 2017 at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida. It’s a good bet Episode IX will follow suit. Star Wars Celebration is just over 100 days away — it’ll be held April 11-15 in Chicago. Hey, at least US tax day means something good this time.Game of ThronesSeries release date: April 2019 on HBOWhat we want to know: How will Jon and Daenerys learn that they’re not just lovers, but are related? Will any of our long-lost favorites (Syrio Forel! Khal “Aquaman” Drogo!) make a return for the show’s final six episodes? Will any Starks get a happy ending? How will that 55-day battle we’ve heard about come across onscreen? Cersei’s going to have to pay for her crimes, right, whether by the hand of brother Jaime or brother Tyrion? Oh, and almost as an afterthought: Who will win the Iron Throne? How to get caught up: The easiest way to watch previous seasons is to have HBO NOW or HBO Go. (HBO Go is the one that comes with an HBO cable subscription, but HBO NOW is the standalone service for cord-cutters and the like.) Individual episodes and seasons are also available to buy via services such as iTunes and Amazon Prime Video. Or buy past seasons on DVD or Blu-ray.Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) has come a long way from that idealistic girl who once dreamed only of her prince. HBO How can Game of Thrones possibly wrap up eight seasons of drama and dragons and death in just six episodes, even if they’re super-sized? A trailer would give us a clue. And no, not a plain old tease, like the 39-second goodie dropped earlier this month that was about as generous with details as Cersei is with her wine. When? It’s hard to tell exactly when HBO will provide that real look — but here’s a new clue. Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd, who watched some of the final season being filmed, published an interview with Game of Thrones producer Carolyn Strauss this week. They mostly discussed the Deadwood movie, which she is also producing, and Hibberd flat-out asked where the trailer is. “I gotta believe something is going to come out before too long,” she said. We’ll just cling to that for now, thanks.Stranger ThingsSeries release date: Sometime in 2019What we want to know: How will the kid romances — Eleven-Mike and Max-Lucas — continue in this season, which takes place in the summer of 1985? It’d be too boring if the course of true love ran smooth. What exactly will go down at Starcourt Mall, the new mall hyped in this video from July? Can Will ever shake off what happened to him? Will “Dad Steve” stay cool? Can we ever truly understand what happened to Eleven and the the other numbered kids? And will Joyce and Hopper start sittin’ in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G?How to get caught up: You can watch all the seasons on Netflix, duh, or pick it up on DVD or Blu-ray. Some of the home video packaging is made to look like old VHS tapes you might’ve picked up in the actual 1980s time period of the show. Make it a Blockbuster night!Dammit, kid, where is the trailer? Netflix Stranger Things is the master of releasing videos that look enticing, but leave you empty. Kinda like Eggos. On Dec. 9, a video delivered what are apparently the episode titles for season three, but left fans to do the detective work behind what they mean. Two of the titles, Mall Rats and The Battle of Starcourt, seem to hint there will be a big fight of some kind in the new Starcourt Mall. Class of 1985 grad here to say this rings true, we loved the mall back in the day. I’d even brave the Upside Down for an Orange Julius and a Benetton sweater. When?
