Sports Ministry to Relocate for SKD Complex Renovation

first_imgThe Ministry of Youth and Sports is relocating from the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville to 19th Street Sinkor due to the impending renovation of the Complex. The ministry, which has been occupying the SKD Sports Complex for nearly nine years, is expected to move by Saturday, June 21, 2014, according to its Press and Public Affairs Department. The repair work at the Complex is set at the cost of US$16 million agreement signed between the Liberian government and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in July-2013.The senior engineer and chief of Chinese technical team, Mr. Yi Xuebo said, “the renovation is duly authorized by the PRC government and it is a Chinese fully funded project.”Engineer Yi said, “the US$16 million is temporary because it could be a bit higher during the actual construction period.”He named areas to be renovated as the playing pitch, track, tennis court, scoreboard, practice pitch and around the field.Youth and Sports Minister Eugene Nagbe said a comprehensive renovation will lead to the restoration of the SKD Sports Complex. The renovation is expected to last for about two years.Earlier, the formal agreement, known as the Letter of Exchange Notes, was signed between Foreign Minister Augustine K. Ngafuan and Chinese Ambassador, Zhao Jianhua.Ambassador Zhao said the renovation of the Complex is the PRC’s first ever project and assured Liberians of a brand new complex. He added that the Complex is a manifestation of the Chinese friendship towards the Government and People of Liberia.Foreign Minister Ngafuan described the project as a continuation of a “Good Partnership.”“You have entered a terrain that is very close to a lot of Liberians…sports, which they call (here) the passion of life,” he said, “sports is not just for recreation but also for reconciliation which is also good for progress.”The Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex is a multi-purpose stadium built in 1986. The decade’s civil war destroyed the 35,000 capacity’s Complex. In September 2005 a US$7.6 million renovation began and completed two years later was done by Hunan Constructing Engineering Group Corporation.Meanwhile, as the result of the Complex impending closure the National County Meet will be held at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia. However, the shutting down of the tennis court would not affect the over 600 youths that are involved in the game, because the Liberia Tennis Federation (LTF) has been experiencing leadership crisis for about  18 months.LTF Secretary General John P. Dexter and Acting President, Houssein Cheaitou have been tussling over the leadership of the federation to the detriment of the sport.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

‘We came out and played with some fire’ B52s learn from, look to build from loss

first_imgSometimes a loss a says a whole lot more about a team than a win does. After loosing 12-1 in their series opener on the road against the Healdsburg Prune Packers on Saturday, the B52s responded with a much better outing on Sunday and pushed the Prune Packers into extra innings, eventually loosing 4-3 in 10 frames. It was a loss which B52s’ head coach Scott St. John said described as a moment in which his club showed perhaps as much promise going forward as it had in any win this season.“After …last_img

Getting More Energy from the Sun

first_imgSeeking the ideal materialToday’s commercial solar cells are made from one of three materials: silicon, cadmium telluride (CdTe), or copper-indium-gallium-selenide (CIGS). Each has strengths and weaknesses.Silicon solar cells are highly efficient, converting up to 25% of the sunlight that falls on them into electricity. Silicon also is very durable. However, it is very expensive to process silicon into wafers. And these wafers have to be very thick (about 0.3 millimeters, which is thick for solar cells) to absorb all of the sunlight that falls on them, which further increases costs.Silicon solar cells – often referred to as first-generation solar cells – are used in the panels that have become familiar sights on rooftops. Our center is studying another type called thin film solar cells, which are the next generation of solar technology. As their name suggests, thin film solar cells are made by putting a thin layer of solar absorbent material over a substrate, such as glass or plastic, which typically can be flexible.A CZTS solar cell on a flexible glass substrate made by Corning. (Photo: Tara Dhakal)These solar cells use less material, so they are less expensive than crystalline solar cells made from silicon. It is not possible to coat crystalline silicon on a flexible substrate, so we need a different material to use as a solar absorber.Although thin film solar technology is improving rapidly, some of the materials in today’s thin film solar cells are scarce or hazardous. For example, the cadmium in CdTe is highly toxic to all living things and is known to cause cancer in humans. CdTe can separate into cadmium and tellurium at high temperatures (for example, in a laboratory or house fire), posing a serious inhalation risk.We are working with pyrite and CZTS because they are nontoxic and very inexpensive. CZTS costs about 0.005 cents per watt, and pyrite costs a mere 0.000002 cents per watt. They also are among the most abundant materials in the Earth’s crust, and absorb the visible spectrum of sunlight efficiently. These films can be as thin as 1/1000 of a millimeter. Global demand for energy is increasing by the hour as developing countries move toward industrialization. Experts estimate that by the year 2050, worldwide demand for electricity may reach 30 terawatts (TW). For perspective, one terawatt is roughly equal to the power of 1.3 billion horses.Energy from the sun is limitless – the sun provides us 120,000 TW of power at any given instant – and it is free. But today solar energy provides only about 1% of the world’s electricity. The critical challenge is making it less expensive to convert photo-energy into usable electrical energy. To do that, we need to find materials that absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity efficiently. In addition, we want these materials to be abundant, environmentally benign, and cost-effective to fabricate into solar devices.Researchers from around the world are working to develop solar cell technologies that are efficient and affordable. The goal is to bring the installation cost of solar electricity below US$1 per watt, compared to about $3 per watt today. RELATED ARTICLES Cost of Solar Electricity Hits a New LowPV Systems Have Gotten Dirt Cheap Green Building in the Cheap Energy EraSolar Potential Is Far Greater Than Earlier EstimatesThe Big Allure of Cheap PVSolar Now or Later?U.S. Wind Energy Prices Hit an All-Time LowThe End of Peak Oil? So far, cells are inefficientWe need to crystallize these materials before we can fabricate them into solar cells. This is done by heating them. CZTS crystallizes at temperatures under 600 degrees Celsius, compared to 1,200 degrees Celsius or higher for silicon, which makes it less expensive to process. It performs much like high-efficiency copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS) solar cells, which are commercially available now, but replaces the indium and gallium in these cells with cheaper and more abundant zinc and tin.So far, however, CZTS solar cells are relatively inefficient: they convert less than 13 percent of the sunlight that falls upon them to electricity, compared to 20% for more expensive CIGS solar cells. We know that CZTS solar cells have a potential to be 30% efficient. The main challenges are 1) synthesizing high-quality CZTS thin film without any traces of impurities, and 2) finding a suitable material for the “buffer” layer underneath it, which helps to collect the electric charges that sunlight creates in the absorber layer. Our lab has produced a CZTS thin film with seven percent efficiency; we hope to approach 15% efficiency soon by synthesizing high-quality CZTS layers and finding suitable buffer layers.CZTS solar cell structure (Drawing: Tara Dhakal) Pyrite has a stability problemPyrite is another potential absorber that can be synthesized at very low temperatures. Our lab has synthesized pyrite thin films, and now we are working to layer those films into solar cells. This process is challenging because pyrite breaks down easily when it is exposed to heat and moisture. We are researching ways to make it more stable without affecting its solar absorbency and mechanical properties. If we can solve this problem, “fool’s gold” could turn into a smart photovoltaic device. In a recent study, researchers at Stanford University and the University of California at Berkeley estimated that solar power could provide up to 45% of U.S. electricity by 2050. To meet that target, we need to keep driving down the cost of solar power and find ways to make solar cells more sustainably. We believe that abundant, nontoxic materials are key to realizing the potential of solar power. At Binghamton University’s Center for Autonomous Solar Power (CASP), we are investigating ways to make thin film solar cells using materials that are abundant in nature and nontoxic. We want to develop solar cells that are reliable, highly efficient at converting sunlight to electricity and inexpensive to manufacture. We have identified two materials that have great potential as solar absorbers: pyrite, better known as fool’s gold because of its metallic luster; and copper-zinc-tin-sulfide (CZTS). Tara P. Dhakal is an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Binghamton University, State University of New York. Ind-NZ Test: Tendulkar bowled thrice in a row

first_imgThe Little Master’s fear seems to be coming true as age apparently has been catching up with the legendary cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar . For, the all three innings Tendulkar batted in the ongoing home Test series against the Kiwis, he was bowled out by one seamer or the other. On the fourth day of the second Test in Bangalore, Tendulkar managed his highest score of the series – a meagre 27 – when Tim Southee rattled his stumps on Monday. In the first innings, he was bowled out by Doug Bracewell for only 17 runs. In the first Test in Hyderabad last month, which India won by an innings and 115 runs, Tendulkar was bowled out by Trent Boult for only 19 runs. Earlier, when Tendulkar was bowled through the gate in the first innings, there were quite a few voices in the commentary box that felt the master batsman’s footwork was to be blamed. Sunil Gavaskar and Sanjay Manjrekar, who were on air when Tendulkar was dismissed by Bracewell, felt that Tendulkar was not taking a big enough stride and was getting stuck on the crease. In fact, the former batting legend said on air that “it is a worrying sign” as he expressed concern about the “big gap between the bat and the pad” in Tendulkar’s dismissal on Tuesday. Sachin very much capable to play: ShuklaHowever, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stood by the Master Blaster insisting that he was “capable to play”. In Delhi, BCCI vice president and Union Minister Rajiv Shukla said, “He is making runs. It is not important to make centuries. He is still very much capable to play.” Rubbishing speculations over Tendulkar’s retirement, Shukla said, “When he thinks that he should retire, he will. I think it should be left up to the player to decide when he wants to retire. We should not put any pressure on them.” – With Headlines Today inputsadvertisementlast_img read more

FW CDO Chad Phelps to Resign

first_img Ogle’s memo to employees: Phelps’ decision to leave comes just weeks after CEO David Nussbaum stepped down to take a position as chief executive at America’s Test Kitchen. During that time, the company also made two quick divestitures of its World Tea Media group and its HOW Design events. Thanks, Jim Phelps joined the company about eight years ago and instantly made a mark by overseeing a digital transformation that a led to a significant ecommerce operation.  His departure will also trigger a reorg of the company’s digital team “in several ways,” says Ogle.  F+W chief digital officer Chad Phelps is resigning from the company, according to an internal memo from interim CEO James Ogle.  Again, I appreciate Chad staying on for the next short while to ensure we stay the course with this important business. I am in Fort Collins this week and we will continue to talk through these changes; but if you have any questions don’t hesitate to contact me. I would like to hear from you as your input will be valuable in setting our long term direction. In the spring of 2014, F+W underwent a corporate rebranding and then sold a majority stake to Tinicum, a private investment firm.   Early last week Chad Phelps, Chief Digital Officer, tendered his resignation effective December 1st. Chad has been a driving force for F+W for eight years and he is ready for a new challenge. We thank him for his tremendous effort transforming a primarily print-focused media company to the ecommerce and content leader we are today. While at F+W, Chad has also created a talented and results-driven team, second to none. The Digital Media team formerly centralized under Chad will be reorganized in several ways. Chad and I have spoken about this at length mindful of what’s best for the business and least disruptive in the short term. There will be some ‘moving parts’ so I ask everyone associated with these changes to be flexible knowing the ultimate structure we end up with will be dependent on the final candidate we choose to fill our search. And that you continue to perform the important work you do without interruption as we head into the critical holiday shopping season. Chad and I have had the pleasure of working together for nearly 15 years and I want to thank him personally for the innovation, drive, and passion he brings to his work. I hope you will join me in wishing him well in the next venture of his career. Chad will stay on through the next six weeks to allow for a smooth transition as we search for our next leader of the digital business.  According to the memo, Phelps’ last day will be December 1, allowing the company time to find his replacement.  Between 2008 and 2014 ecommerce revenues grew from $6 million to $60 million, and the company now has about 33 online stores that generate more than 100,000 transactions each month.  last_img read more

Star Wars 9 Stranger Things Game of Thrones When will we get

first_img Game of Thrones Disney Star Wars Netflix Share your voice 77 Photos TV and Movies Best Netflix series: There’s no shortage of original Netflix series to binge.Culture: Your hub for everything from film and television to music, comics, toys and sports. Netflix tricked me on Thursday. The streaming service dropped a new video with the familiar, haunting-looking Stranger Things logo on it, and for a minute I thought: Is it? Could it be? A season 3 trailer?I pushed play and seconds later I felt like Netflix tossed me into the Upside Down. That was no trailer, but instead a two-minute video showing the kid actors from Netflix’s hit wrapping presents. Ho-ho-horribly not funny, Netflix. The Avengers: Endgame trailer is finally here, after impatient fans tweeted about it pretty much every day since Avengers: Infinity War came out in April. But isn’t it time for a Stranger Things trailer? And Star Wars: Episode 9? Maybe Game of Thrones? Here’s a look at the three trailers that have moved to the top of fans’ want lists now that Endgame ended that waiting game.Star Wars: Episode 9Movie release date: December 2019 in theatersWhat we want to know: The title (personally still rooting for this), how Princess Leia’s story will be handled since the death of beloved Carrie Fisher, what role Luke (Mark Hamill) will play after the events of The Last Jedi, are Rey’s parents really “filthy junk traders”… heck, we’re waiting for pretty much everything. How to get caught up: You can watch Star Wars: The Last Jedi on Netflix streaming if you’re a member, and you can rent or buy Star Wars: The Force Awakens on various online services, from Amazon Prime Video to iTunes. If you’re old-school, you can buy them on DVD or Blu-ray.The fates of Leia (Carrie Fisher) and her brother, Luke, are both up in the air in Episode IX. Lucasfilm No one’s eager to see new footage from a Star Wars movie, right? Naw, can’t imagine anyone caring about that. PSYCHE. Even Mark Hamill snarked on fans’ desire for Episode IX footage by promising an “exclusive Star Wars trailer photo” and then punking them. When? So when will the first Star Wars: Episode IX trailer make the Kessel Run into our browsers? The Last Jedi came out in December 2017, just like Episode IX is scheduled to come out in December 2019. The first Jedi trailer came out in April 2017 at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, Florida. It’s a good bet Episode IX will follow suit. Star Wars Celebration is just over 100 days away — it’ll be held April 11-15 in Chicago. Hey, at least US tax day means something good this time.Game of ThronesSeries release date: April 2019 on HBOWhat we want to know: How will Jon and Daenerys learn that they’re not just lovers, but are related? Will any of our long-lost favorites (Syrio Forel! Khal “Aquaman” Drogo!) make a return for the show’s final six episodes? Will any Starks get a happy ending? How will that 55-day battle we’ve heard about come across onscreen? Cersei’s going to have to pay for her crimes, right, whether by the hand of brother Jaime or brother Tyrion? Oh, and almost as an afterthought: Who will win the Iron Throne? How to get caught up: The easiest way to watch previous seasons is to have HBO NOW or HBO Go. (HBO Go is the one that comes with an HBO cable subscription, but HBO NOW is the standalone service for cord-cutters and the like.) Individual episodes and seasons are also available to buy via services such as iTunes and Amazon Prime Video. Or buy past seasons on DVD or Blu-ray.sansastarkcrop.jpgSansa Stark (Sophie Turner) has come a long way from that idealistic girl who once dreamed only of her prince. HBO How can Game of Thrones possibly wrap up eight seasons of drama and dragons and death in just six episodes, even if they’re super-sized? A trailer would give us a clue. And no, not a plain old tease, like the 39-second goodie dropped earlier this month that was about as generous with details as Cersei is with her wine. When? It’s hard to tell exactly when HBO will provide that real look — but here’s a new clue. Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd, who watched some of the final season being filmed, published an interview with Game of Thrones producer Carolyn Strauss this week. They mostly discussed the Deadwood movie, which she is also producing, and Hibberd flat-out asked where the trailer is. “I gotta believe something is going to come out before too long,” she said. We’ll just cling to that for now, thanks.Stranger ThingsSeries release date: Sometime in 2019What we want to know: How will the kid romances — Eleven-Mike and Max-Lucas — continue in this season, which takes place in the summer of 1985? It’d be too boring if the course of true love ran smooth. What exactly will go down at Starcourt Mall, the new mall hyped in this video from July? Can Will ever shake off what happened to him? Will “Dad Steve” stay cool? Can we ever truly understand what happened to Eleven and the the other numbered kids? And will Joyce and Hopper start sittin’ in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G?How to get caught up: You can watch all the seasons on Netflix, duh, or pick it up on DVD or Blu-ray. Some of the home video packaging is made to look like old VHS tapes you might’ve picked up in the actual 1980s time period of the show. Make it a Blockbuster night!joycenoah1Dammit, kid, where is the trailer? Netflix Stranger Things is the master of releasing videos that look enticing, but leave you empty. Kinda like Eggos. On Dec. 9, a video delivered what are apparently the episode titles for season three, but left fans to do the detective work behind what they mean. Two of the titles, Mall Rats and The Battle of Starcourt, seem to hint there will be a big fight of some kind in the new Starcourt Mall. Class of 1985 grad here to say this rings true, we loved the mall back in the day. I’d even brave the Upside Down for an Orange Julius and a Benetton sweater. When? But when it comes to Stranger Things, Netflix is in love with its own fake-outs. Here are the episode titles! Here’s a trailer promoting the mall! Here are the kid stars wrapping gifts! Here’s a made-up holiday, Stranger Things Day, upon which we will deliver nothing! So stay strong, fans, there could be more feints before we get anything real. If season two is any guide — and it may or may not be — fans might want to get ready for some football. The first trailer for Stranger Things season 2 came out during the 2017 Super Bowl, preceding an October release of the show. The Super Bowl certainly provides a big enough canvas for the Stranger Things trailer. This year’s big game is on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019, in Atlanta, Georgia. GEORGIA. Where STRANGER THINGS IS FILMED. Coincidence? Yeah, totally, but still, you might want to mark your calendar for the big game, and try and take bathroom breaks during the gridiron action, not during the ads.center_img Tags 0 2019 movies to geek out over Post a commentlast_img read more
