Loss hurts even if Pitt upsets Cincinnati

first_imgTOUGH LOSS—West Virginia’s Wes Lyons, right, dives for yardage while being held by Pitt’s Jarred Holley, lower left, during the first quarter Nov. 27, in Morgantown, W. Va. Maybe. And that’s a big maybe.A big loss before the Panthers’ biggest regular season game in decades means they could be asking themselves “What if…” after the season ends, just as they have so many times since their top 10 run of the late 1970s and early 1980s ended.Whenever the Panthers seem ready to turn the corner and return to being the power player they long were, something bad seems to happen. This time, something bad was West Virginia, a rival that has tormented Pitt repeatedly during a 102-game series in which the unexpected is commonplace and rankings and records truly mean nothing. The Mountaineers’ last-play 19-16 victory in Morgantown last Friday night offered some payback for Pitt’s stunning upset of the then-No. 2 West Virginia in 2007. It also takes some of the gloss off the first championship game in the 18 years the Big East has played football.“Coach told us not to dwell on this one too much, but it’s still tough,” defensive end Greg Romeus said. “And it hurts.”Wannstedt doesn’t doubt his players will be ready Saturday for Cincinnati (11-0, 6-0 in Big East)., which yielded 102 points and 1,338 yards in beating Connecticut (47-45), West Virginia (24-21) and Illinois (49-36) in its last three games. However, Wannstedt also said they wouldn’t be thinking about Cincinnati when they were preparing for West Virginia, only to say afterward his players weren’t ready. The Panthers (9-2, 5-1) huddled for a team meeting on Saturday—on what was supposed to be a day off—only 10 hours after returning to Pittsburgh.“We told everyone that we’re coming in and we’re going to get going on Cincinnati,” linebacker Adam Gunn said. “Our goal this year is to win the Big East championship.”Still, even if Pitt wins it, 10-2 won’t be the same as 11-1.What if Stull hadn’t thrown two interceptions? What if Noel Devine hadn’t needed a single block to break free on an 88-yard touchdown run? What if Wannstedt hadn’t gambled on a 53-yard field goal try? What if West Virginia hadn’t gained the last inch needed for a critical first down on the decisive drive that ended with Tyler Bitancurt’s fourth field goal, a 43-yarder?“This is tough, and it’s going to be tough,” said Stull. “Just considering the type of game this was, the Backyard Brawl, the last one for our seniors to be part of. …It hurts.”Might for a very long time, too. by Alan RobinsonPITTSBURGH (AP)—Maybe No. 8 Pitt will shake off the disappointment of its first Backyard Brawl loss to West Virginia since 2006, beat No. 5 Cincinnati, win the Big East Conference and play in a BCS bowl.Maybe a loss that will drop the Panthers out of the top 10 won’t hurt as badly if they end Cincinnati’s perfect season.last_img read more

Leafs, Hawks ready for Round Three

first_imgDale Howell, tied for fifth in KIJHL scoring, is right behind Hunt in Leafs scoring with 11 points.Hunt, Howell and 16-year-old Ryan Piva are tied for the lead in goals for Nelson, each with four.Piva has goals in each of the last three games for Nelson.Paxton Malone and Mason Jones lead the league in scoring, each with 14 points.Injuries starting to add up for LeafsAfter having to sit a few players due to numbers, Leaf management is now beginning to see a few injuries add up on the roster.Dooley said netminder Jason Sandhu is out due to a lower body injury while Eamonn Miller and Jacob Karran are both out of the lineup due to upper body injuries.Dooley said all three players are expected back soon.Dooley said Spencer Selby missed some of the games at the start of the season because of his carding approval through hockey Alberta.’We signed (Spencer) late in the tryout process and and by the time his transfer went through all the necessary steps it wasn’t until after our first twogames he was approved.”Wounded NitehawksThe Nitehawks will be again missing two players for Friday’s game against Nelson.Tyler Hartman and McKoy Hauck were hit with two-game suspensions for multiple fights during the stoppage of play. The suspensions were picked up in the September 23 game against Grand Forks forcing the pair to miss Saturday’s game against Nelson.Grand Forks and Beaver Valley combined for more than 200 minutes in penalties during the game, won 5-2 by Grand Forks. This was the second time this season Grand Forks and Beaver Valley players spent more time in the penalty box than on the player’s bench.Grand Forks goalie Anthony Gilliart and Rylan Smaha-Muir also received two-game suspensions. One month into the season and not one team in the Murdoch Division of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League has taken control.Currently, three teams — Grand Forks Border Bruins, Beaver Valley Nitehawks and Nelson Leafs — are tied for top spot with the Bruins getting the edge having played one less game.Right on the heels of the three front-runners is Castlegar Rebels, who have won three straight games after struggling out of the gates after losing twice during an East Kootenay road trip. The Nelson Leafs continue its September run through the Murdoch Division by hosting the Beaver Valley Nitehawks Friday at 7 p.m. in the NDCC Arena. The game is the lone contest on the schedule for Nelson after the Leafs played three times last weekend.”Right now our concern is putting together a full 60 minutes of hockey, developing our team systems . . . especially defensively,” said Leaf coach Sean Dooley on the eve of the game against the defending Murdoch Division champs.”We’re doing a good job putting the puck in the net and now we have to focus on keeping it out of ours.”The two teams have hooked up three times already, and the season is not even out of September.Beaver Valley started the season by edging the Leafs 3-1 on opening night. Nelson evened the series last Saturday with a 4-3 win in Fruitvale.Hunt on fire to start the seasonNelson Leafs winger Sawyer Hunt appears to have found his scoring touch after returning to his roots in the Heritage City. The 5’11”, 175-pound Nelson Minor Hockey grad has points in five of the Leafs seven games — registering points in the last three contests.Hunt, tied for third in KIJHL scoring, finished his final season in Kimberley with 35 points. If he continues his at this pace, the former Dynamiter would almost triple his points total of a year ago.last_img read more

Excellent commercial brands with strong reputations support a positive nation brand – Brand South Africa CEO, Mr Miller Matola

first_imgIN reflecting on the value of strong commercial brands to a country’s nation brand, I stumbled upon the following definition of national competitiveness :“National Competitiveness is a term that can be defined on a number of levels. At its most basic level, a country’s competitiveness requires a good use of human and natural resources for a country to achieve some goal. The goals that a country chooses are a reflection of the philosophy of the country, but they typically have two things in common: productivity and efficiency. A country can achieve a better competitive position through its ability to introduce productivity and efficiency into its use of these human and natural resources.Ultimately, the competitiveness focus of a country is intended to drive some higher order benefit – from improved quality of life to longer life expectancy – but the common language for such goals tends to focus on increasing the inflow of capital to the country, in the form of exports or foreign direct investment.”Brand South Africa and Brand Finance will on 22 July 2014 announce the country’s top 50 commercial brands.  This explanation of a country’s national competitiveness becomes very pertinent when we consider why this announcement will matter to our overall nation brand, competitiveness and reputation.Indeed, Simon Anholt, who is regarded as the father of nation branding has said that “national image has more to do with national identity and the politics and economics of competitiveness.”In the politics and economics of competitiveness, we need to consider more than just the country’s GDP and other such numbers. We need to consider whether we are competitive in terms of being able to grow a nation that can compete equitably with global peers, are we growing individual brands with solid reputations that are considered as leaders in their individual industries?I believe that with any developing country and emerging economy, such as South Africa is, a plethora of challenges continue to confront our country and its developmental agenda.  The National Development Plan succinctly outlines these challenges and at the same time, proposes suitable remedies that must be implemented.  I recently heard a term – execution deficit – I am convinced that this is our country’s most serious affliction.  We have wonderful policies yet we simply do not implement them.  A cursory reading of many of them will make one ask the question, “Why do we need another policy?  Why do we not just implement what we already have in place?”However, on a corporate level, I think that we have begun to look systemically at what needs to be done to develop and sustain a competitive advantage in the global market place. Many of the Top 50 brands actually have a presence beyond the borders of our country and this attests to the fact that we are beginning to get the formula for sustainable competitive advantage correct.  Quite a few of our home grown commercial brands are now blazing the trail both on the continent and abroad, contributing to strong and positive associations of South Africa across the globe.  In turn, they build the attractiveness profile of the country for inward investment, “visitability” and skills.A country’ products and services are a critical competence and measure used by investors and consumers to rate the country’s appeal and attractiveness.  A nation’s brands are purveyors of the identity, image and attributes of a country and therefore go a long way in the nation brand building and promotion process. When one looks at our top national brands with their domestic and international presence, it is therefore befitting that South Africa continues to rank as a top destination not only for tourism but also inward investment. In this regard, the recent AT Kearny FDI Confidence Index ranks South Africa 13th globally, the only African country to be in the top 25 in the world while the EY Africa Attractiveness Survey attests to South Africa’s standing as the top destination for FDI projects on the continent. The country attracted 142 projects in 2013, Kenya comes second with 68 projects; Nigeria comes third with 58 projects; and Ghana comes 4th with 58 projects as well.Despite how good all of this sounds, something that stands out for me is the contribution these commercial brands make to our national GDP.  While this calculation is never an exact science, using the 2012 World Bank Local Currency GDP and ZAR revenue for the top 50 companies in 2013, we see their contribution to GDP at a phenomenal 66%.This by itself is a staggering figure but I’m certain the picture will grow more appealing if we look at the contribution of these companies to the fiscus through tax contributions and job creation. The central message is that our national top 50 commercial brands are an important driver of our nation brand reputation and competitiveness. This matters because South Africa is committed to positioning itself in the global marketplace as a destination of choice for inward flows of investment and capital.  This will contribute to our national priorities of economic growth, job creation and sustainable development and ultimately the implementation of the National Development Plan.Watch out for the announcement of the 2014 Top 50 Brands on Tuesday 22 July 2014.last_img read more
